We are proud to announce that Trapster has just released its first app for the Android platform.
We have been busy here at the Trapster office working all the kinks out of our Android app. Lots of testing and driving has gone into this exciting release and we can’t wait to get your feedback.
What is Android?
What is Android? Android brings Internet-style innovation and openness to mobile phones.
One of the coolest things about the Android is that it was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications and be truly open source. The Android website does a great job of explaining what “open source” means.
“For example, an application can call upon any of the phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users. Android is built on the open Linux Kernel. Furthermore, it utilizes a custom virtual machine that was designed to optimize memory and hardware resources in a mobile environment. Android is open source; it can be liberally extended to incorporate new cutting edge technologies as they emerge. The platform will continue to evolve as the developer community works together to build innovative mobile applications.”
Check out this great video with the team who created the Android application:
Some great news for Android users, T-Mobile is to follow up the world’s first Android smartphone – the G1 – by launching their second Android phone – the G2 – this summer. T-Mobile reports that there are now more than 4,900 apps available for download in the Android Market, with more being added everyday.
So we are beyond excited to be announcing the release of our first 1.0 beta app for Android.
Trapster on Android
Our Android version of Trapster has all the functions you love when reporting and viewing traps. We even added traffic incidents as another feature to utilize when out driving around. However, the Android is hands down the coolest because unlike Apple’s iPhone, Trapster users can run the app as a background application. You get the value of the app – real-time speed trap alerts – without having to keep the app open.
We know that Trapster fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of an Android version of the app, so make sure to visit the Android Market on your phone to download Trapster. Here are some of the great things the Android version of Trapster has:
- We have the world’s most complete and up to date crowdsourced speed trap and camera database with over 400,000 traps reported.
- You get real time alerts for police radar/laser speed traps, mobile speed cameras, and checkpoints.
- There are customizable alerts for red light cameras, fixed speed cameras, and known speed trap locations.
- By using dynamic alert area narrows and elongates based on your speed and direction of travel.
- As you approach a reported trap a spoken voice alert will play, and on-screen icons will animate, according to the type of trap (for example “Live Police!”).
- You can view real time traffic/accidents/incidents.
- We make it easy to report traps that you see by simply tapping the screen and rate traps submitted by other users (agree/disagree).
- And lastly, the Trapster system learns the credibility of users over time based on how many other users agree with the traps they report.
Don’t forget to check out the screen shots below! Also, we would love to hear your feedback about our first Trapster Android app, so make sure to ping us. Questions and comments are always appreciated.
