After you are done using the app, double-click on the home button, then press and hold the app until they start jiggling. It will bring up a little negative symbol, press that, and it should close it. I think you can tell it is closed, because the little arrow that now comes up at the top of the phone near the battery disappears. I think that little arrow is what tells you the phone is still locating you via GPS. Which would make sense on why it would drain the battery.
